We’ve just received some amazing news from California – Mihael’s Christmas video has been picked as one of the 10 best clarinet videos of 2011! Clarinet Cache – the blog and the column of the same name in the world’s premiere clarinet magazine ‘The Clarinet’ (the official publication of The International Clarinet Association), lists Jingle Bells as one of their favorite YouTube picks in the selection that is conducted each year and already established as a popular sight for must-seen clarinet videos. Commenting on the video, the authors praise Mihael’s smooth sound and polished technique while sparing no compliments for the ‘unique arrangement’ itself. Aside from being published only in the very last week of the year, the fact that says much about its viral effect, this is the first time ever that a Croatian clarinetist has been featured by Clarinet Cache. Considering the amount of videos published in each year – the staggering number of more than 50,000 of them – the insertion into the top ten represents quite a remarkable achievement.

Mihael Paar is the annual winner of the Croatian Composers’ Society Prize for the best interpretation of a work by a Croatian composer at the Darko Lukić Tribune. The jubilee celebrated 40th Tribune finals hosted ten exquisite performing artists under 30 years of age who in the period from October last year till April this year, presented themselves with a solo recital in the distinguish Lisinski hall. Paar’s interpretation of the Suite by A.Klobučar, as confirmed by the jury compiled from the representatives of the artists, critics (Vjesnik Herald) organizer (HDGU/Lisinski) and composers (HDS), rates as the best and most versatile performance of a work by a Croatian composer in the 2006/07 season. The Darko Lukić Tribune itself excels as the oldest and most prestige competition for the Croatian artists which in its long history launched careers of some of the most acclaimed musicians in the region such as hornist Radovan Vlatković and soprano Ivanka Boljkovac. M.Paar’s award consists of a diploma, cash prize and the prizewinners’ concert held in the Lisinski hall on the 30th April. Both of his concerts (competitive and prizewinners’) were recorded and aired by the Croatian radio, while his award-winning performance of the Klobučar’s Suite will be exclusively featured on his Debut CD scheduled for 2008.

On the November 29, UNI ART Performance – concert management of the Mozarteum School of Music organized an audition with a task to discover and promote new names, both soloists and ensembles, by enrolling them into management’s artistic program. Mihael Paar and Mirabell Quartet chose to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A-major KV 581 (the so-called Stadler-Quintet) and were unanimously admitted into the program. By coming under the patronage of UNI ART Performance, the ensemble will now regularly take part in concert events and festivals all across Austria and Germany, thus extending their concert activities and stamping the way towards foreign podiums. The Mirabell Quartet itself stands alone as one of the most distinguished string quartets of the Mozarteum University; internationally built up by violinists Kathrin ten Hagen (Ger) and Asa Nakajima (Jpn), violist Alexandru Bota (Rum) and cellist Johannes Kubitschek (Aut), Quartet earned smooth critiques from Salzburg’s press as well as the prestigious Raiffeisen Klassik-Preis award in May 2005. Together with M.Paar, they labour under the mentorship of Rainer Schmidt, member of the world renowned Hagen Quartet, and professor at the Mozarteum School of Music in Salzburg.

At the International Piano Composition Competition Town of Challenge (15th Edition) which took place in Barletta (Bari) in Italy from May 3 to May 8, Mihael Paar won 3rd prize for his one movement piece Amoroso for solo piano. The given theme of this edition was Poetry and Piano with the choice to compose a work for solo piano, four hands piano or solo voice accompanied by piano, with a maximum allowed duration not exceeding 20 minutes. In a single category without age limit, eighteen compositions submitted anonymously and signed only by a maxim entered for the competition. Although it is only now that M.Paar brought out this composition of his, he wrote it as early as in 2000, when he was not even 20 at the time, but still the work has not had its premiere yet. Special weight to this prize is given by the fact that he is neither a pianist nor has he ever studied composition, whereas in a very strong international competition he distinguished himself as one of the youngest competitors and the only one coming from Croatia.
