I once said it needs two to play Mendelssohn on the clarinet.

His Concert Pieces for two clarinets are so popular they can not be omitted when you play in a duo. Masterpieces by a master composer!

Večer koja će se pamtiti! Oproštajni koncert Maestra Ante Grgina u Zagrebu. Prekrasno i emotivno. Jedinstveno!

Izveli smo sve Capriccie, Duo, Trio i Kvintet. Ante je potom rekao i dvi-tri riči, a onda i zasvirao onako kako samo on zna.

Hvala Bruni, Abdulu, Davidu, Rudi, hvala svim kolegama na podršci, Hrvatskom društvu skladatelja i svima drugima koji su pripomogli da ovu večer učinimo posebnom!

Ballad for piano premiered in my hometown

Wonderful performance of my Ballad for piano by Srebrenka Poljak last year in my hometown of Samobor. The piece has been performed all around Croatia and abroad, but it took more than 15 years to be performed here where it was written in 2000.

Srebrenka has indeed captured the soul of the Ballad delivering number of nuances and colors. Thank you and bravo!

Večer hrvatskih skladatelja i večer za pamćenje!

Mihael je prošloga tjedna održao izrazito zapaženi recital u Koncertnoj dvorani Vatroslava Lisinskog posvećen djelima hrvatskih skladatelja.

Nastupio je uz pijanista Filipa Faka, a kao gost pridružio mu se proslavljeni jazz pijanist Matija Dedić s kojim je izveo i njegovu autorsku skladbu posvećenu upravo njemu. U dupko ispunjenom ‘Malom Lisinskom’ našli su se te večeri mnogi poznati glazbenici poput Gabi Novak, Silvija Glojnarića, Mateja Meštrovića, Saše Nestorovića i mnogih drugih, a sinergija koju su Mihael i Matija tada postigli pamtit će se još dugo.

Koncert je pokazao Paarovu orijentaciju na domaći repertoar koji sustavno promiče i u kojem nalazi veliki dio inspiracije za svoj umjetnički rad. U ovoj sezoni očekuje ga niz gostovanja, kako solističkih tako i onih s Cameratom Cantilly, te rad na novim diskografskim projektima. Koncert u Lisinskom organizirala je Udruga Klarinetist.hr, a pod pokroviteljstvom Grada Zagreba.

Concert with Camerata Cantilly – Aftermath

After a few days of a rest, I was finally able to ‘recover’ and find the time to tell you more about the concert with Camerata Cantilly.
I am happy and relieved now that it is all over – it was an immense joy for me to lead the Ensemble once again. And I can tell you, Camerata is something very special – a vision that I embraced already in 2013 and tailored it to a full-scale, one-of-a-kind artistic form. The future is promising – there are three concerts scheduled for the autumn already, one of them our first international appearance. The collaboration with composers, arrangers and other musicians continues. We are introducing our specific sound to even a bigger audience now.
Our repertoire is expanding. Our performance is evolving. Our Passion is growing.
Camerata Cantilly is Samobor based, International Ensemble, a vision that became a project and ultimately evolved into a distinctive and respectable entity in the music life of Croatia.

Accolades for debut recital at the 5th Epidaurus Festival in Cavtat

In a number of diverse music festivals along the Croatian Adriatic, a special place belongs to the Festival at the very south of the country, in the historical region of Konavle and their central and starting point – the ancient town of Cavtat. The authenticity of this picturesque place lies behind its name as it reveals the Latin syntagma ‘Civitas Vetus’ (meaning the old town), that modern Croatian name Cavtat derives from, while its ancient Greek description ‘Epidaurus’ leads to even further and richer history. It is this very name of the archaic Greece period that stands today as the headline of the Festival itself.

In such rich environment and the wealth of heritage, Mihael was particularly honoured by taking part at its 5th edition bringing into it a concept that was carefully designed to reflect the pallet of clarinet standards and oeuvre of the Mediteranian flare, both in the range of classical and contemporary repertoire. This intention, recognized and highly praised by the critics, resulted in the rounded program with performance described as colorful and inspiring, particularly due to Paar’s ability to interpretate wide variety of characters and colors, with the ever-present note of virtuosity of a technically skilled performer. Mihael’s debut recital at the closure tryptich of the Epidaurus Festival was accompanied by the pianist Ivan Pernicki, following the invitation of the artistic director, pianist and poet Ivana Marija Vidović. 2009/10 Season closure – Baermann’s Quintet to set up a new collaboration

Closure of the 2009/10 season brought Mihael’s first appearance with the Samobor Strings, the young unconducted chamber orchestra entering its third subscription year. The concert was held at Samobor’s St. Anastasia Parish Church and featured the works of Mozart, Baermann and Smetana, while for the first time Ensemble being introduced in forms of various smaller chamber groups.

Thus, the Baermann’s virtuoso Quintet for clarinet and strings was performed by the string quartet with Mihael Paar as a guest soloist on this particular occasion. The Quintet is one of those works written for a clarinettist by a clarinettist; idiomatic in the texture, but rounded in the content and musical richness. Ironically, the greatest recognition Baermann would receive for his last long forgotten Quintet emerged in the form of a false attribution; approaching its first modern performance, the Quintet’s central movement went credited as an early work of the great Richard Wagner and remained as such on the repertoire for the entire half of the century. Fortunately, there can be no doubt today as wether this divining Adagio derives from the Baermann’s pen and belongs to his Quintet op. 23.

Its praised Samobor premiere gave a symbolic prelude to the newly established collaboration of the Samobor Strings and their guest soloist.

MIHAEL AT HIS BEST – THUNDERING OVATIONS FOR THE SOLOIST!

In his Debut in the city of Osijek and belonging Osijek Summer Festival – the far largest cultural manifestation in eastern Croatia – Mihael was set up to deliver one of the most darring performances of his recent time. Upon the invitation of Maestro Mladen Tutavac and chamber orchestra ‘Franjo Krežma’ he interpreted the Clarinet Concerto by Bruno Bjelinski thus joining the century brithday celebration of the Croatian classic. Ecstatic audience in the fullfiled St. Mihael (!) Church anticipated the unanimous reviews by radio, television and press that followed: ‘…Acoustic and dynamic profilation of themes and phrases with distinctive musicality and technical perfection…’ (B.Ban), while the Festival Jury describes Mihael as a ‘Brilliant Soloist at the Osijek Summer’. On the repeated ovations and four curtain calls he responded with a challenging encore – Chopin’s Chromatic Etude op.10-2 arranged by himself for clarinet and strings and executed virtually in a single breath…
